Chapter 15

Avia slid into Chirrot’s lap, and he fed her a forkful of egg. Avia looked up at him as she chewed. She had been taught to never speak with her mouth full and she swallowed. “You have Mommy worried, Chirrot.”

“About what?”

She turned, looking at her Mother talking with Charity. “About what you said.”

He sighed. She was being cryptic on purpose. She had heard the entire conversation in her mind and had a desire to have Chirrot pick it apart. “What I said about her being a showoff?”

“Yes and no. That hurt her feelings a bit because she really doesn’t do it to show off. She is trying out new ideas as they come to her. You and Demetri help her sometimes, but for the most part, she learns on her own. That isn’t the real reason that she is worried.”

“So do you care to tell me why she is?”

“No. You tell me.”

He sighed. “I don’t know, Avia.”

“That isn’t true. You do know. What else did you say to her?”

“I said that she shouldn’t have allowed the men to leave.”

“I told you that you knew.”

Chirrot glared at her for making the know it all comment, but she didn’t care. He had known the answer and he had spoken it.

“So she is worried about my opinion of her?”

“No. She is worried that you said that in the first place. It doesn’t exactly shine brightly on your character.”

Chirrot stared at her and she saw the light shine in his eyes. He suddenly understood what her mother was worried about. So the next problem was what he would do about it. He had Mommy stressed out about them being attacked by the new clan. It would not happen, or Avia didn’t think it would. Her premonitions were kind of hit and miss sometimes. They might tell her if it would happen, but they might not speak to her if nothing might happen. She would have to wait and see. It was hard to not have a complete understanding about adult matters. Too bad there wasn’t a way that her mother could grow her like the trees. Of course, that wouldn’t make her mind any older, just her body. “Think carefully, Chirrot. Mommy is really upset about this.”

She grabbed a bite of his toast and slid down. With a sweet grin, she turned and headed to go play with her brothers. Mommy and her daddies were going into the old town and the boys wanted to go. She didn’t. It was not going to be a fun trip at all. What she wanted to do was to go to the caves and see how Daniel was making out with the clay. Avia headed toward Sherra who was going to be watching them for the day.

She tugged on her grandmother’s shirt. Sherra smiled at her. “What’s up sweetie?”

“Can we go to the caves to see how Daniel is doing with the clay?”

“I don’t see why not. Let me ask your grandfather if he will go with us.
